Chabad and The Reagan Library: Celebrating Triumph of Freedom This Chanukah

November 23, 2004

On Sunday, December 5, 2004, a unique event billed “The Triumph of Freedom – Chanukah and the Reagan Legacy” will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. The hour-long ceremony of holiday entertainment of celebration will pay tribute to the accomplishments of the nation’s 40th president as a champion of universal freedom. A majestic menorah in the picturesque Freedom Plaza adjacent to the Reagan Memorial will be kindled.

The event is co-sponsored by Chabad of the Conejo, Chabad of Simi Valley and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library,. “The holiday of Chanukah carries a universal message in that it celebrates the historical triumph of good over evil, freedom over tyranny, light over darkness,” said Rabbi Moshe Bryski, Executive Director of Chabad of the Conejo. “Indeed, the kindling of the menorah is a testimonial to this spirit of light, hope and perseverance. It is because this very message is so much a part of the Reagan legacy that we are joining with the Reagan Library in bringing this special celebration to the greater community.”

A Family Festival in the new Presidential Learning Center will precede the kindling. The festival, open to the public free of charge, will include music, crafts, face painting, a juggler show, the Presidential Characters, gifts for the children, doughnuts, dancing and a children’s choir. The festival begins at 3:30 p.m. It will be followed by the outdoor kindling ceremony.

The huge menorah will be placed next to the slab of the Berlin Wall. It was of this wall that President Reagan echoed his famous words, “This wall will fall,” on June 12, 1987, in his remarks at the Brandenburg Gate of the Berlin Wall. “This wall will fall for it cannot withstand faith; it cannot withstand truth. This wall cannot withstand freedom.”

Distinguished guests are expected to participate in this tribute to President Reagan.

The Library is located at 40 Presidential Drive in Simi Valley. There is no fee for the festival or kindling. A nominal fee is charged for those who would like to take a tour of the Presidential Museum. For further information on the “Triumph of Freedom” event please call 818-991-0991.
